Are you planning an in-home family session and wondering what to wear to capture those picture-perfect moments? One of the most common questions I get in the planning stages with clients is “What should we wear?” Choosing the right attire for your session can make a significant impact on the overall look and feel of your photographs. In this blog post, I will guide you through styling choices and provide valuable tips on what a family should wear to create stunning and memorable images during an in-home session.
Classic Neutrals & Earthy Tones
When it comes to in-home family sessions, opting for classic neutrals and earthy tones is a timeless choice. These colors not only create a cohesive and harmonious look but also complement the warm and inviting ambiance of a home setting. Consider shades such as soft creams, warm browns, muted grays, and gentle pastels. These hues provide a versatile backdrop that allows the focus to remain on the genuine interactions and emotions between family members.
Coordinated Color Palette
To ensure a visually pleasing and well-coordinated look, aim for a color palette that harmonizes with your home’s décor and reflects your family’s style. I always tell families to choose a palette of three to four colors. Coordinate the outfits of family members by incorporating complementary colors or shades from the same color family. I strongly suggest starting with mom and what she likes best and feels most comfortable with, then work your way from there. For example, if mom is wearing a soft gray dress, one kid can wear a cream sweater, another can wear khaki pants paired with a pastel-toned shirt. This also allows for each family member to choose clothes they are comfortable in and show their personality, yet maintains overall cohesiveness. Following this one tip enhances the overall visual appeal of the photographs.
Layers and Textures
Adding layers and textures to your outfits can bring depth and visual interest to your in-home family session. Consider incorporating items such as chunky knit sweaters or cozy cardigans. These elements not only provide a stylish touch but also allow for versatility during the shoot. Layering is one of the main suggestions I give because they can be easily added or removed, creating different looks and adding visual variety to your photographs.
Comfort is Key
Remember that these photos will be there for you to look back on for years to come. I always recommend that mom finds something she feels amazing in, then work the rest of the family off of that. I really do encourage moms to wear a dress – long dresses are best for movement shots! Every family member should feel comfortable in their chosen outfits. Avoid overly formal or restrictive clothing that may hinder movement or make individuals feel self-conscious. Select pieces that reflect each person’s individual style and that will allow you to relax and be yourself during the session. When everyone feels comfortable, it will naturally translate into genuine moments captured in the photographs.
These tips will help create a visually appealing and meaningful collection of family photographs that will be treasured for years to come. Your clothing should reflect your family’s style which will reflect through the photos! Choose clothing that everyone can cuddle up in on the floor or dance in the kitchen!
