As a family photographer, the most frequently asked question I get is, “What should we wear for our session?” It’s a valid concern! styling outfits for your family for a photo session might seem intimidating, but trust me, it’s simpler than you think! When my clients ask me this question, I always tell them these 3 things!
#1 Comfort is Key
The first rule when styling for any photo session is to make sure everyone’s comfortable with what they’re wearing! This becomes even more important in in-home sessions where the mood leans towards being casual and natural. Consider clothing that allows you and your family to move effortlessly and feel relaxed! Knits, relaxed jeans, or the feel of your favorite pajamas are perfect examples of comfortable yet stylish clothing. I always tell my clients to remember, that when they’re comfortable, they’re confident, and that’s exactly what we want!!
#2 Coordinate, Don’t Match
Choosing colors can be tricky. The golden rule here is to coordinate colors, not match them exactly. Decide on a broad color scheme, and then let everyone pick their outfits within that palette! This will add a more natural, and less ‘staged’ feel to your photos. For winter sessions, lean more toward warm, neutral colors. Creams, grays, and earth tones can be wonderful choices.
#3 Keep it Simple
Outfits that have a lot of patterns or big logos can shift the focus away from the people in the photo. Instead, opt for solid colors or subtle patterns that will enhance the photo without overwhelming it. Layering is a great way to add texture to your outfits without going over the top. Think a cozy sweater over a white shirt or a cute scarf adding a pop of color to a neutral outfit!
